‘The Master Game’ by Robert de Ropp was a huge bestseller of the early seventies, as hippies were transitioning into yuppies via the burgeoning Human Potential movement. De Ropp was a former Biochemist turned spiritual seeker who studied with various unconventional figures of the time, such as Madame Ouspensky and Gurdjieff, eventually combining elements of their teachings with more mainstream psychology, psychiatry and his own research into religion to create ‘The Master Game’. The book presents life through his interpretation of game theory, examining the roles people choose (or are forced) to play, which he categorises into low, neutral, and high tiers.

De Ropp suggests that the ‘Master Game’ represents the highest form of existence — the ultimate expression of consciousness. Those capable of playing this game are considered to be at the pinnacle of spiritual awakening, and only a small number of individuals will ever reach this state. A person who can master the Master Game is capable of playing all the others. On a higher plane, one can choose to play at a lower level, but those at a lower level cannot transcend their own.
